What is Folio Number?
A unique identifier assigned to an investor's account with an AMC.
Understanding Folio Number
A folio number is a unique account identifier assigned to an investor by an AMC when they first invest in any scheme of that AMC. All subsequent investments in different schemes of the same AMC are linked to the same folio, making it easier to track the investor's complete relationship with that AMC.
Each AMC assigns its own folio numbers. An investor with holdings in schemes of five different AMCs will have five different folio numbers — one per AMC. The folio is maintained in the RTA systems (CAMS or KFintech) and appears on all statements and commission reports.
For IFAs managing large client bases, folio-level data reconciliation is critical for trail commission accuracy. Commission is calculated at the folio level — discrepancies in folio mapping can result in commission shortfalls that go undetected without systematic software.
“For Indian IFAs, a clear understanding of folio numberis essential to managing a compliant and profitable advisory practice.”
