What is RTA?

Quick Answer

Registrar and Transfer Agent — processes MF transactions, maintains folio records, and disburses commissions.

Understanding RTA

An RTA is a SEBI-registered entity that acts as the back-office operations partner for AMCs. RTAs process all investor transactions (purchases, redemptions, switches, SIPs), maintain folio records, apply NAV, and handle commission payments to distributors.

In India, the two RTAs — CAMS and KFintech — together cover the entire mutual fund industry. Each AMC outsources its investor servicing to one of these RTAs. The RTA is the authoritative source for transaction records, commission data, and folio information.

For distributors, the RTA is the primary data source for commission reconciliation. All commission statements, AUM reports, and folio data originate from CAMS or KFintech. Fin-Soft's software is built to ingest and process RTA data for automated reconciliation.

“For Indian IFAs, a clear understanding of rtais essential to managing a compliant and profitable advisory practice.”
